‘Indiana Jones 5’ Update: John Rhys-Davis wants Sallah's return in the sequel, reveals why he’s not in the 2008 film

Indiana Jones 5 is coming as confirmed last year by Bob Iger and it will be one of the many films planned for the adventures of Henry Jones. Now, John Rhys-Davies, who played Sallah in the franchise, has shared his thoughts on returning for the fifth film.

Fans might see Sallah again when Indiana Jones 5 hits the big screen soon. According to Youth Health Mag, John Rhys-Davies, who played the character, said in a recent interview that he wants to be back for the Indiana Jones 5. "Of course, I would like to do another one. He's a great character-but I'd have him do something meaningful," the 'Shannara Chronicles' actor stated.

Rhys-Davies' Sallah is Jones' best ally during the first film, Raiders in the Lost Ark and the third film, The Last Crusade. According to the actor, everytime he encounters Steven Spielberg, he'll jokingly remark to the director that the first and third film were great and "there seems to be something missing from two or four... I wonder what it is."

The actor was notably missing from the latest film in 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and he discussed it, as reported by Cinema Blend. Rhys-Davies revealed that he turned down the role since it would be degraded to a mere cameo appearance.

"I was asked to be in the last one, but they wanted me to do a bit of green-screen - walk in, sit down and clap - and they were going to cut that into the wedding scene at the end," Rhys-Davies said. He added that he's turned it down since it would be a betrayal to the audience's expectations, knowing that the character is a popular one which everyone loved and admired.

In the interview, he also expressed his thoughts whether his character would be accepted to return since he's concerned on the roles of Arabs in Hollywood. Digital Spy wrote that Rhys-Davies is wondering if Sallah would still be allowed to join Indiana Jones 5 since the time is no longer a place in Western popular culture to have 'good Arabs.' "Perhaps that is one reason why it may well not happen. But if that's the case, then it's a tragedy for all of us," he said.

While Sallah in the form of Rhys-Davies seems unlikely in Indiana Jones 5, his fans can still see him on the small screens as Eventine Elessedil in the newly launched series 'The Shannara Chronicles'. Nonetheless, Indiana Jones 5 will see the return of Harrison Ford as the titular character and Steven Spielberg as its director.
