Classic musical fantasy film Mary Poppins is set to get a yet to be titled sequel. This time, Disney has tapped Emily Blunt to play the role of the titular magical woman who was previously played by Julie Andrews. Meanwhile, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is also included in the second installment.
Mary Poppins came out more than 5 decades ago and yet, Disney has still considered to make a sequel to it with Emily Blunt in the titular role. According to Entertainment Weekly, Disney's upcoming magical musical film, Mary Poppins 2, is happening and Blunt is in negotiations to play the beloved character. Blunt will be reunited with Into The Woods director, Rob Marshall, in the second installment of Mary Poppins.
Inquisitr thinks that Emily Blunt is the perfect star for the role firstly done by Julie Andrews in 1964. Blunt is reportedly rosy-cheeked, charismatic, delicate and British which is just like Andrews in the first movie. Though, many were delighted to know that there is a follow up to the story of Mary Poppins, some didn't receive the sequel well. However, Inquisitr wrote that it could have been a move by Disney to continue promoting the strong female lead just like in their other films such as Frozen, Inside Out, and Brave.
Meanwhile, another casting update is that Lin-Manuel Miranda is in talks to portray a character similar to Dick Van Dyke's Bert, as reported by Daily Mail. Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of Hamilton, is appearing in the upcoming film as Jack, a lamplighter who assists Mary Poppins for another Banks rescue mission. The actor is bound to join in the plot detailed as "the now grown-up Jane and Michael Banks who have experienced a personal loss that results in the arrival of the magical Mary Poppins. She teams up with her lamplighter friend Jack (Miranda) to help the family."
The sequel is being written by David Magee and will feature a score done by Marc Shaiman. Meanwhile, Scott Wittman, Rob Marshall, John Deluca and Marc Platt will produce. There is no release date and official title set for Mary Poppins 2, but the second installment in the book series was called Marry Poppins Comes Back, so it wouldn't be surprising if Disney adapts the same name.
