After the release of "Thor," "Hulk," and "Iron Man" on the silver screen, Marvel Studios is set to debut another superhero from its comic book universe. Marvel's "Doctor Strange," a series of comics that features a former neurosurgeon who became Earth's primary protector from anything magic and mystical, first graced on Marvel Comics's pages in July 1963.
Multiple reports have spread the news that the production for a standalone movie is already underway. Director Scott Derrickson and screenwriter Jon Spaihts are reportedly very active in revising the script. KPopstarz quoted Derrickson, who in an interview, expressed his excitement in working with Spaihts. He said, "Obviously it's been announced there's a writer on Doctor Strange but in that situation it's maybe my favorite screenwriter in town. I'd read four of his scripts before ever meeting him. I think that the opportunity to work with great talent and people who can supersede my abilities in various areas is extremely exciting to me. Like, Jon Spaihts is a genius."
Rumors as to who will be playing the character of Stephen Vincent Strange have also been actively circulating online. According to Screenrant, the latest actor who is said to be in the running to play Dr. Strange is "Boardwalk Empire" actor Jack Huston. Huston played Richard Harrow in the HBO television series, who is famous for his tin half-face mask in the show, according to his IMDb profile.
The 31-year-old is not a stranger to Marvel. He was actually one of the candidates who was in the running for the role of Star-Lord in the "Guardians of the Galaxy." Unfortunately for him, Chris Pratt won the role, and went on to cement his A-lister status in Hollywood.
Other names that were mentioned who were supposed to be gunning for the character are Jon Hamm, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joaquin Phoenix, and Tom Hardy. All but Hamm had responded about the Marvel casting rumors. Citing a Digital Spy interview, Moviepilot quoted the "Mad Men" actor, who said, "The funny thing about the internet is that you can have rumors go on about possible jobs and possible things that I had no idea about...maybe...I don't know. You know, it's funny when the internet knows more about you than you do, but...maybe the internet was talking to Marvel, I don't know. (laughs) No, I certainly wasn't approached by (Marvel), but I do like Dr. Strange. He's a very cool, cool character."
Meanwhile, TotalFilm reported that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was quoted as saying that the new "Doctor Strange" film will hopefully help bring interesting changes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He said, "I believe it's very, very important for us to explore every nook and cranny of the comic-book universe. We've done the street-level heroes, and we've done the billionaire superheroes. We've now done the cosmic side with Thor and Avengers and most obviously with [Guardians of the Galaxy}, but there's a whole other side of the Marvel comics, which is that supernatural side - the interdimensional side of the Marvel universe."
"Doctor Strange" is rumored to be released on July 8, 2016, a month after the scheduled release of "Captain America 3."
