Avatar was a worldwide blockbuster success, thus, huge expectations are circling the upcoming Avatar 2. Director James Cameron provided an update on their progress in developing the sequel but also said that the developments are "top secret".

Cameron's 2009 fantasy thriller film, Avatar, bagged the title as the highest grossing film of all time, but the adventures of Neytiri and Jake Sully are set to continue in the upcoming sequel. Filming is yet to begin for Avatar 2, and according to Indie Wire, Cameron revealed that they are currently having performance capture work.

"We do performance capture work. You have to think of it more like an animated film, so it's not really shooting per se. It's a lot of performance capture work, so yeah, we're getting into that," Cameron said. However, Cameron stood firm not to give more details about the production. "It's top secret. Remember The Manhattan Project, did they talk about that?" he added.

Very little details have been released for the flick. Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington are expected to reprise their roles as Neytiri and Jake Sully. Plot details are still under wraps, but as reported by Digital Spy, it is rumored to center on the married life of Jake and Neytiri while familial and imprisonment themes could also be explored.

Jake and Neytiri are also speculated to movie beyond the forest of Pandora and see its bodies of water, which is also part of the reason for the delay as Cameron revealed that they took time in developing the technology for the scenes.

No release date has been set in stone for the movie either. According to Vine Report, the film was previously slated for a December 2017 release date, only to be retracted for unknown reasons. However, the rumor mill is also hard at work suggesting that the sudden change in release date could have been done to avoid Star Wars: Episode VIII which also has its large cult following.

Aside from Saldana and Worthington, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver are also set to return for the upcoming Avatar 2. The sequel is set to be directed by James Cameron who also wrote the script with Josh Friedman.
