Decades after the release of the first film, a sequel for Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi flick has been finally put in motion. The sequel, currently dubbed Blade Runner 2, recently added Dave Bautista and Robin Wright to the cast and will star alongside Ryan Gosling.
The sequel is definitely moving forward after its long stay in the development hell as Bautista and Wright have been confirmed in their own key roles for the sequel. As reported by Screen Rant, the announcement was made by Alcon Films who also confirmed that filming is set to begin in July this year.
Plot details are still under wraps but it is speculated to take place several decades after the events of the first film. According to Games Radar, Denis Villeneuve is on board to direct the project which was written by Hampton Fancher along with Michael Green. Ridley Scott is also not missing out on the project as he is set to oversee its progress as a producer.
Bautista previously teased about the project in his Instagram post where he was photographed holding an origami unicorn. According to /Film, the unicorn was one of the recurring elements in the previous film as one origami unicorn was left for Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard as a reference to his dream.
It is rumored that the origami could be one of the indicators of whether Rick Deckard was a human or also a replicant. But it is worth noting that Scott also previously hinted that Deckard could be an advance form of replicant. Such case could also be a sign that the role Bautista is set to play is a form of replicant.
However, until official details about their roles are revealed, speculations regarding Bautista and Wright's characters must be treated with a grain of salt. Renowned cinematographer Roger Deakins is also on board as cinematographer for Blade Runner 2 that is expected to be released in theaters on January 12, 2018.
