‘Aquaman’: James Wan teases sea monsters, “fun” film with lighter feel compared to ‘Batman v Superman’

'Aquaman' is an upcoming science-fiction adventure film based on the DC comic book superhero of the same name. Director James Wan hinted that the film may feature sea monsters and that it would be a "fun" film in comparison to Zack Snyder's 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'.

According to Comicbook.com, Wan hinted that his upcoming standalone film for DC's King of the Seven Seas will "explore the depths of our oceans". This may include an array of sea creatures as well as sea monsters.

The Malaysian-born Australian film director is best known for his work on several blockbuster horror flicks including 2004's 'Saw', 2007's 'Dead Silence', as well as 'The Conjuring' series. He also directed the seventh installment in the highly popular 'Fast and the Furious' cinematic franchise, 'Furious 7'. It does not come as a surprise that Wan would incorporate possible horror-inspired elements into his new project with DC.

According to /Film, Wan admitted that although he was familiar with Aquaman while growing up, he was more into other characters such as the X-Men, Spider-Man or Batman. However, he thought that Aquaman was "cool" nevertheless.

He said, "...there's always something kind of cool about Aquaman still, the idea of creating a huge world that is on our planet. That's the thing about Aquaman that's cool is he's not an alien, right? He's from our planet and he's from a society that we're not privy to in the context of the story. Isn't it crazy to think that we've explored space more than we have explored the depths of our ocean? That just fires up my imagination about potential sea monsters and cool creatures, that kind of stuff."

According to another article by Screen Crush, Wan suggested that his film will be less grittier and more fun compared to Zack Snyder's recent release 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'. Snyder is well-known for his use of dark tones and grungy stylistics often incorporating slow motion in fight scenes. This is very well represented in his 2007 epic fantasy film '300', which was a fictionalized reimagining of the Persian Wars and the Battle of Thermopylae.

Wan reassured fans that he would make 'Aquaman' as fun as possible. He said, "The kind of filmmaker that I am...even my darker horror films generally are still very fun and I think that's important for me and the kind of films I make. Aquaman is a character that a lot of people have made fun of over the years and I just think it's fun to actually show a really different, cool, badass side to this character, but at the same time, let's not forget to have fun with it."

'Aquaman' is an upcoming science-fiction adventure film intended as part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). It stars Jason Momoa of 'Game of Thrones' fame as the titular superhero. The film is scheduled to be released on July 27, 2018.
