‘Top Gun 2’ reunites Tom Cruise with Jerry Bruckheimer after three decades; Sequel won’t be a remake but a continuing story

'Top Gun 2' is a planned action-drama film that may see the return of Tom Cruise as the iconic Lt. Maverick. Cruise will reunite with producer Jerry Bruckheimer for the second installment since the release of the original film in 1986. It was revealed that the sequel will neither be a remake nor a reimagining, but will be a continuing story.

According to Deadline, Bruckheimer confirmed that he and Cruise will reunite for the continuing adventures of Lt. Maverick. The co-producer announced the news on social media with a picture of him and Cruise captioned, "Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend Tom Cruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2." Bruckheimer co-produced the original 1986 film together with Don Simpson in association with Paramount Pictures.

It was reported that Skydance Productions will be developing the upcoming sequel together with Bruckheimer. According to Wired, Skydance CEO David Ellison confirmed in June last year that the film was already greenlit but no further details have been given since then.

Ellison did hint that the new film will continue to follow the main protagonist Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. He said, "There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick. It is going to be Maverick playing Maverick. It is, I don't think, what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon."

Cruise will reprise his role as Maverick, the fictional U.S. navy pilot who was the original film's main protagonist. Maverick was introduced into the series as a highly skilled yet restless pilot with a dangerous flying style as well as a troubled nature.

The 53-year-old actor admitted he would like the new film to employ practical effects instead of CGI. He said, "I'd like to fly those jets again. But we've got to do all the jets practical. No CGI on the jets."

Plans for a second installment in the action-drama cinematic series were put to a halt after Tony Scott's suicide. However, it was reported that Paramount was optimistic about the possibility of pushing through with the project. According to Empire, Scott previously revealed that the sequel will neither be a remake nor a reinvention but a continuing story of technological developments in the military as well as explore the end of an era of fighter pilots in favor of drones.

'Top Gun 2' is an upcoming action-drama film starring Tom Cruise as Lt. Maverick. It is the sequel to the 1986 classic hit film of the same name that grossed a $356 million at the box office upon its release. The original film helped catapult Cruise into Hollywood stardom.
