'Assassin's Creed' may not have premiered in theaters yet but it is already getting a sequel. The upcoming science-fiction and adventure film based on Ubisoft's video game series will feature Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch. A new photograph from the film was recently released showing his character in a cell.

According to Den of Geek, Justin Kurzel's upcoming live-action adaptation of Ubisoft's video game of the same name is set to receive a sequel even before its scheduled release in theaters on December 21, 2016. U.S. production company New Regency is planning to explore the film's mythos further although no further details for the follow up have been confirmed as of the present.

Oscar-nominee Michael Fassbender is reportedly returning for a sequel although it remains unknown whether Kurzel will return to direct or if Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard will continue to co-star. Fassbender will be introduced as the main protagonist Callum Lynch as well as his ancestor Aguilar in the first 'Assassin's Creed' film. According to We Got This Covered, it will tell the story of Callum Lynch as he travels back in time to 15th Century Spain in order to explore the memories of Aguilar, a deadly assassin operating under the Spanish Brotherhood of Assassins.

According to /Film, the film won't be adapted from a single game in the original series by Ubisoft but is just a chapter in the overall franchise. The new photograph released showed Fassbender in character seemingly hunched over and passing time in a prison cell.

The 38-year old German actor likened the film to the Watchowski Brothers' science-fiction trilogy 'The Matrix' during a previous interview. It was reported that Kurzel will put more emphasis on practical effects as opposed to special effects and will employ "very little green screen".

'Assassin's Creed' is an upcoming live-action adaptation of Ubisoft's video game of the same name. It is directed by Justin Kurzel and penned for the big screen by Bill Collage, Adam Cooper and Michael Leslie. It stars Fassbender, Cotillard, Emmy-awardee Brendan Gleeson and Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons.
