‘A Nightmare On Elm Street’ Remake was planned as a “twisted” ‘Goonies’ film; Directors Julien Maury, Alexandre Bustillo reveal inspiration

'A Nightmare on Elm Street' remake is an upcoming film based on Wes Craven's original film from the 1980s. The first remake, released in 2010, was planned as a 'Goonies'-inspired reimagining. Directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo revealed details of their pitch that weren't followed through.

According to /Film, the remake of the iconic slasher franchise from the 1980s was originally planned out to be a 'Goonies'-inspired film with real children replacing teenagers. Samuel Bayer, known for his work on several mainstream music videos, helmed the 2010 film written for the big screen by Wesley Strick and Eric Heisserer. It was a reimagining of Wes Craven's original 1984 release that introduced audiences to the villainous Freddy Krueger.

Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo were originally attached to helm the 2010 remake but the project eventually went to Bayer. The directorial duo, famous for their French horror hit 'Inside', revealed that they intended for 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' to have the same thematic elements as 'The Goonies'.

The latter is an American adventure film released in 1985 and has achieved cult following status through the decades. It follows a group of pre-teens attempting to save their homes from demolition. The kids inadvertently find themselves on a quest to find the treasure of a legendary 17th century pirate named One-Eyed Willy.

According to Dread Central, Maury and Bustillo opened up about their unused pitch saying, "Our idea of a good remake is to have a new vision on the same thematics... Here it was to really use the fact that Krueger is a child molester. So the idea was to have a twisted version of the 'Goonies' with a bunch of kids being stalked. We thought it would have been great for a remake to switch the teenagers of the original with real kids. Beside childhood is the moment in life when you are truly and deeply frightened by nightmares, when you're not able to see the difference between reality and dreams..."

Craven's original film starred several veteran actors including Robert Englund and John Saxon but it also introduced Hollywood's rising stars Johnny Depp and Heather Langenkamp into the film scene. It was set in a fictional town in Ohio with a plot that revolved around teenagers stalked by a malicious demon-like entity in the form of a burnt serial killer.

It was reported by First Showing that New Line Cinema planned for a second remake of the franchise, with 'Orphan' scribe David Leslie Johnson on board for the new screenplay. It was also reported that Toby Emmerich, Walter Hamada, and Dave Neustadter will oversee for the studio. Plot details are unavailable as of the present, but it is assumed that Freddy Krueger will return to frighten another group of teenagers.

'A Nightmare on Elm Street' remake is the second planned reimagining of Wes Craven's original 1984 film. The first remake created to revitalize the aging horror franchise was released in 2010.
