'The Thomas Crown Affair' remake is a planned film under MGM. Michael B. Jordan of 'Creed' and 'Fruitvale Station' fame is set to star as the main protagonist, Thomas Crown, a role previously made famous by Steve McQueen and Pierce Brosnan in earlier films.
According to /Film, the heist film directed by John McTiernan starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo is set for a second remake under MGM. The 1999 film itself was also a remake of a 1968 film produced and directed by Norman Jewison starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway.
MGM is set to revive the iconic film, which is still in its early stages of development. The studio is looking for a new director for Michael B. Jordan who is set to play the lead protagonist.
Jordan gained international attention through his role in the highly-acclaimed Rocky Balboa sequel 'Creed', which earned franchise mainstay Sylvester Stallone a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards. Jordan appeared in television series 'Friday Night Lights', 'The Wire', 'Parenthood' and 'The Assistants'.
The 29-year old actor also starred in several big screen projects including Ryan Coogler's biographical drama film, 'Fruitvale Station', which earned critical acclaim upon its release. He also worked in the direct-to-video animated film 'Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox', Tom Gormican's romantic comedy film, 'That Awkward Moment', as well as in the box office bomb, 'Fantastic Four', released in 2015.
The original 1986 film was nominated for two Academy Awards and won an Oscar for Best Original Song for Michel Legrand's 'Windmills of Your Mind'. According to Forbes, it featured McQueen as millionaire business-sportsman Thomas Crown who robbed banks on the side, while Dunaway played the role of an independent insurance investigator assigned to his case to bring him down. It has a moderately successful run at the box office, earning $14 million against a $4.3 million budget.
The 1999 remake cast Brosnan as the new Crown, with Rene Russo as the insurance investigator and Crown's lover. It grossed $124 million against a $48 million budget and gained generally positive reviews from critics. The film's most notable change from the original was its ending.
According to another article by The Hollywood Reporter, Jordan allegedly came up with the idea of a modern remake and eventually pitched it to MGM executives. In a previous interview, he cited Denzel Washington, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise as his inspirations for pursuing a Hollywood Career. He added, "I have not played a cop. I haven't played a soldier. . . . A villain, I haven't ever played a villain... I want my career to be a reflection of what I like, and I like a lot of different things. So I want to take my time."
