'The Mummy' reboot is an upcoming adventure-fantasy film starring Tom Cruise in the lead role. The actor was spotted in Malta as he was scouting possible filming locations for the new film. Meanwhile, his ex-wife Katie Holmes is rumored to be pregnant with Jamie Foxx's child.

According to Film New Europe, Cruise was spotted spending Valentine's Day weekend in Malta. He was reportedly scouting out potential locations for the upcoming reboot of 'The Mummy', one of the films slated to be released under Universal Pictures' planned monster movie cinematic universe. He was seen in Fort St. Elmo at the coastline of Valletta.

The new film will be directed by Alex Kurtzman and written for the big screen by Jon Spaihts. Kurtzman will also serve as producer along with Sean Daniel and Chris Morga. Bobby Cohen will be executive producing.

Cruise will play the film's lead protagonist with Sofia Boutella of 'Kingsman: Secret Service' attached to play the reimagined female version of the titular mummy. It is set in the Iraqi desert and follows a Navy Seal as he uncovers an ancient tomb in an army bunker. Although plot details remain scarce, it will be set in the modern times in comparison to the previous remakes starring Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz.

The horror-adventure film series began in 1932 and consisted of six installments including Boris Karloff as the original Imohtep the mummy. Tom Tyler, Lon Chaney Jr. and Eddie Parker also played earlier versions of Imohtep in the succeeding sequels.

Director Stephen Sommers remade the classic films into a trilogy in 1999. It starred Frazier and Weisz, with Arnold Vosloo taking over as Imohtep. The three films were set in the years 1920, 1933 and 1946.

According to Malta Today, Kurtzman's remake for Universal was originally scheduled to be released on March 24, 2017 but was delayed for June 9 of the same year.

Cruise is one of the first A-listers joining Universal's cinematic monster series. It is not surprising that he should headline such an action-packed new role as he is well known for his string of Hollywood blockbuster films including 'Mission: Impossible', 'Jack Reacher' and 'Top Gun'. It was also recently revealed that Johnny Depp has signed on to star as the new Invisible Man in his own standalone film in the series.

Meanwhile, it was speculated that Cruise's ex-wife Katie Holmes could be pregnant with Jamie Foxx's child. According to the Morning Ledger, the two are planning to wed after two years of dating but have kept their relationship secret, especially from Cruise. A source close to the couple said, "She's afraid that he'll be angry that Suri will have a new father figure and come crashing back into her and Suri's lives."

'The Mummy' reboot is set to be released in theaters on June 9, 2017 and is an upcoming adventure-fantasy film intended as a remake to the original film of the same name released in 1932. It stars Cruise and Boutella and is directed by Alex Kurtzman.
