‘Mad Max: The Wasteland’: George Miller reveals inspiration for creation of a dystopian world

'Mad Max: The Wasteland' is an upcoming sequel intended as the follow-up to the rebooted series that began with 2015's 'Mad Max: Fury Road'. Director George Miller, who created the cult favorite, revealed his inspirations for the creation of an on-screen dystopian world. He was also selected as the president of the jury for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

According to WUNC.org, Miller admitted that his inspiration for creating his film's dystopian world had to do with his work on the field as a medical doctor. He revealed, "...growing up in remote, rural Australia, there was a lot of death by autocide. Just people dying on the road. And then, working as a doctor, years later, in a large city hospital, I saw that even more. Somehow that got to me."

The 70-year old critically acclaimed filmmaker made his feature film debut in 1979 with 'Mad Max' starring Mel Gibson in the titular role. Miller was a medical doctor who worked in an emergency facility in Sydney, Australia before he went on to shift careers in full gear as a filmmaker. He witnessed injuries, including fatalities, during his service in the medical community as well as during his growing up years in Queensland.

Miller also admitted that he was always interested in action movies and decided to integrate it into his film debut. He added, "And I thought, "What would it be like for a cop?" I just wondered what that would do to somebody. Plus, it was such a low budget. We couldn't afford to block off city streets in the middle of city. So with all of that, I put in, at the opening of the movie, I said, "A few years from now." As if it were some dystopian society, a failed society."

His original release may have received mixed reviews from critics but its reputation grew considerably over the years. 'Mad Max' became the industry's most profitable film from 1980 through 1999, earning $100 million in the international box office.

According to the South China Morning Post, his 2015 reboot 'Mad Max: Fury Road' starring Tom Hardy as the new Max Rockatansky opened last year's Cannes Film Festival. It is also in the running for several Oscars in the upcoming Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Miller was also recently named the new president of the jury for the 2016 Cannes Film Festival to be held in France from May 11 to May 22. According to The Wrap, the filmmaker was honored to head the prestigious event. He said, "What an unmitigated delight! To be there in the middle of this storied festival at the unveiling of cinematic treasures from all over the planet. To spend time in passionate discourse with fellow members of the jury. Such an honor. I'll be there with bells on!"

'Mad Max: The Wasteland' is an upcoming action-adventure film written by George Miller. It remains unconfirmed if he would return to helm the sequel.
