LG G5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S7: New LG flagship rocks innovative features; Samsung upgrades S7 hardware to address customer needs

By

LG and Samsung unveiled their new flagships - LG G5 and Samsung Galaxy S7 - at the MWC 2016. The LG G5 rocks cutting-edge features while the Galaxy S7 boasts an improved hardware to address users' needs.

With the unveiling of the new Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5 handsets, tech fans are wondering who did better when it comes to design and features - Samsung or LG. International Business Times reported that the notable similarities between the S7 and the LG G5 are their Always-on Display features, microSD card slots for expanding memory storage, and high-resolution displays (2560 x 1440). Both are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processors and run on the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.

According to Android Authority, both LG and Samsung opted to do something different to separate their new flagships from the competition. LG completely redesigned the G4 successor with a unique modular build and a 2,800 mAh removable battery. Aside from that, the LG G5 uses dual rear camera configuration and has two different sensor sizes. It is one of the first handsets to feature Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 technology, which is more energy efficient than version 2.0. It also has CAM plus that gives an additional battery capacity of 1,200 mAh when attached.

It is clear that the LG G5 is trying to build a new brand image with its bold upgrades, veering into a much more innovative direction. LG G5 is a highly competitive product in the premium segment with clear differentiations (removable battery, two rear-end cameras, modular options, etc).

Meanwhile, the key feature of the Galaxy S7 is improvements to the main hardware, including the processor and camera. Although the Galaxy S7 did not offer much innovation, it retained the image and brand of its predecessors to address the needs of customers.

Samsung continues to make use of AMOLED displays in its phones to deliver great graphics for better gaming experience. The Samsung Galaxy S7 is one of the first handsets to support the new Vulkan graphics API. It uses water cooling solution to help keep the device's CPU cool and running at maximum speeds under maximum usage.

Barron's Asia mentioned details regarding pricing and release dates for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the LG G5. According to Nomura Securities' CW Chung, the S7 is priced at around $550/$650 on a 24-month plan from T-Mobile and will be available on March 11. This marketing strategy might help increase Samsung's first-quarter earnings.

On the other hand, LG remains tight-lipped on pricing or release dates. The company simply said that the LG G5 will launch in "key markets" by early April.
