‘Jurassic World’ 2 gets June 2018 official release date; Juan Antonio Bayona to replace Colin Trevorrow as director?

'Jurassic World 2' may be directed by Juan Antonio Bayona who is rumored as the most favorite to replace past director Colin Trevorrow. Meanwhile, Trevorrow will return to the franchise as screen writer as well as executive producer instead.

According to Deadline, Bayona is considered as a favorite among a list of directors slated to replace Trevorrow as director. The filmmaker was previously attached to helm Paramount Pictures' 'World War Z 2' but exited the project for unconfirmed reasons. It was reported that Bayona's close relationship with producer Frank Marshall may not necessarily account for possible directing duties as no negotiations have been made just yet.

The Spanish director is best known for his work on the 2007 horror film 'The Orphanage' starring Belen Rueda. He also worked on the 2012 disaster drama film 'The Impossible', which received positive reviews as well as nominations for leading lady Naomi Watts from the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild.

According to Cinema Blend, Bayona's potential role as director would be an interesting one since it was reported that he has not worked on a big budget film before. He burst through the movie making scene after being known for directing television commercials and music videos.

The film's predecessor, 'Jurassic World', took in $1.6 billion against a $150 million budget. To date, it stands as the fourth highest-grossing-film of all time as well as the second highest-grossing-film of 2015. It was written and directed by Trevorrow.

Although Trevorrow will not be returning to helm the sequel, he is on board as screenwriter together with Derek Connolly. According to Den of Geek, he is set to direct the long-anticipated 'Star Wars: Episode IX' set to be released in 2019.

'Jurassic World 2' is an upcoming science-fiction action-adventure film scheduled to be released on June 22, 2018. Trevorrow will serve as the sequel's writer and executive producer. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will return to reprise their roles as Owen and Claire, respectively.
