'Aquaman' is an upcoming fantasy-adventure film intended as part of the DC shared universe. Jason Momoa will star as the titular king of the seven seas and hinted at his character's internal conflict with himself in the upcoming film. His superhero powers are also revealed.
According to Cinema Blend, the upcoming DC standalone movie about the king of the seven seas will be an origin story exploring Aquaman's parentage. The new plot will make for an interesting struggle for the superhero as he is conflicted between being half-human and half-god.
Momoa, who will portray the titular superhero, revealed a little bit about his character's internal conflict as well as super powers. He said, "He's the only one that's both a human and he's a god. I want to see him struggle with the fact that he has these powers, and he doesn't know how to handle them. That he hasn't been trained." Aquaman is born as Arthur Curry, son of a lighthouse keeper, until he discovers that his mother is the queen of Atlantis.
According to Complex, DC Comics' Chief Executive Officer and producer Geoff Johns also hinted, "[Aquaman] grows up not really feeling like he belongs in either world so he's a man trapped between two worlds, but has a responsibility to protect both of them."
A special preview for upcoming DC films was unveiled on January 19 and showed footage from 'Dawn of the Justice League' that offered concept art for Momoa's on-screen character, according to Yahoo! Movies. Johns explained that Momoa's Aquaman will make his cinematic debut in 2017's 'Justice League' before he goes on to star in his own standalone film. He said of Aquaman's powers, "He can breathe underwater. He can communicate with sea life. He's very strong."
In the original Silver Age continuity in the comic books, Arthur Curry a.k.a. Aquaman was born and raised in Maine to a lighthouse keeper named Tom Curry and his wife Atlanna. The boy eventually began developing superhuman abilities such as breathing underwater and communicating with marine animals. Later in the story, Atlanna revealed on her deathbed that she was an exiled queen of Atlantis and that Arthur will inherit the role as ruler of the seven seas.
'Aquaman' is an upcoming science-fiction adventure film scheduled to premiere on July 27, 2018. It will be directed by James Wan based on a screenplay by David Johnson. Zack Snyder, Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder will serve as producers.
