‘Mad Max: The Wasteland’ Update: Director George Miller confirms more sequels coming in series despite rumors of quitting

By

'Mad Max: The Wasteland' is a planned sequel to 2015's 'Mad Max: Fury Road' that may feature the return of Tom Hardy as the titular protagonist. George Miller revealed that he will continue to make more movies in the cinematic series despite previous reports of his exit from the franchise.

According to /Film, Miller is set to work on more films in the 'Mad Max' franchise despite the "misquoted" statement from a previous interview where he apparently said he was through with the series.

He clarified, "That was a completely garbled interview. I was in New York and it was so noisy and the journalist was asking me questions on a red carpet at the National Board of Review. She completely got the wrong fragments of information that were just not true. I said no, [another 'Mad Max' movie] will not be next, and she took that to mean I never wanted to make another 'Mad Max.' It won't necessarily be next but I have two more stories."

The 70-year old filmmaker spoke with The Wrap after being nominated for ten Academy Awards, including 'Best Director', for 'Mad Max: Fury Road'. According to MovieWeb, the film is the second most nominated movie of the year right after Alejandro G. Inarritu's 'The Revenant' starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. Miller's next two projects remain unconfirmed as of the present.

A previous article by IGN reported that Miller announced he was leaving the popular franchise for good. He revealed during an interview with Page Six that he will not be making any more 'Mad Max' films.

He added, "Fury Road' with Charlize Theron, Zoe Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Riley Keough was forever getting completed. If you finish one in a year, it's considered a leap of faith. Start, stop, start again... Those 'Mad Maxes' take forever. I won't do those anymore."

His statement seemed contradictory to past interviews where he talked about plans for future films in the franchise. The Australian filmmaker rebooted his franchise with 'Mad Max: Fury Road' in 2015. The first and original film was released in 1979 under the simple title, 'Mad Max', and starred Mel Gibson as the titular Max Rockatansky.

'Mad Max: The Wasteland' is an upcoming action-adventure film written by George Miller. It is intended as a follow-up to 'Mad Max: Fury Road' and will be the fifth installment in the Mad Max cinematic franchise. It remains unclear whether Miller will return to direct the new film.
