Fresh Off the Boat Season 2: Christmas blues and Chinese New Year celebrations

By

The upcoming second season of the hit comedy series "Fresh Off the Boat" will have a lot to say about the different holidays that Americans celebrate. Everyone's favorite Asian-American family might be dealing with some post-Christmas blues. At the same, they only have a few weeks to prepare for the Chinese New Year, a cultural event and bonding moment and, as the audience hopes, a source of feel-good and comedic fun.

How Asian-Americans from all generations and orientations react to all things America is one reason why many fans keep tuning in every season. The Korea Portal remembers some of the funnier incidents in the first season. Mom Jessica Huang (Constance Wu) had her hands full explaining to her son, Evan (Ian Chen), who Santa Claus was. Meanwhile, in the new season, her other son, Eddie, is coming to terms with his first school dance. This time it's dad, Louis (Randall Park), who steps in with some parental advice to make this momentous occasion memorable and painless.

Grandma Huang (Lucille Soong) will play a meaty part on season 2 when Jessica visits her to be on her good side.

The Huangs come to grips with their own traditions as they make plans for the forthcoming Chinese New Year this February. Broadway World gives a tease of the episode "The Year of the Rat." The Huangs pull out all stops to spend the holidays with their relatives in Washington, D.C. But something goes wrong at the airport and they somehow end up in Orlando, Florida. Not to give up, the family searches for something that would be the closest to their clan: the nearest association of Asian Americans who would welcome them with open arms.

One Asian-American who will not be watching the show, though, is ironically the real-life Eddie Huang, on whose life and book the series is based. In an Uproxx interview, Huang admits that he had stopped watching the show after endorsing the pilot, because later episodes deviated from his actual stories. Huang said that he barely recognized himself on the show. However, he is grateful that 'Fresh Off the Boat' has brought the Asian-American story to the awareness of the mainstream audience. Huang said that at the very least, it "opened a conversation."
