The story of Hannah and her BFF’s is coming to an end. HBO has announced on Wednesday at the Television Critics Association (TCA) winter press tour that Girls season six will be the show’s final season.
Series creator and lead actress Lena Dunham released a statement via Entertainment Weekly following the announcement, she said: “I conceived of Girls when I was 23 and now I’m nearly 30 — the show has quite perfectly spanned my 20s, the period of time that it’s about — and so it feels like the right time to wrap our story up”.
Dunham also shared that her team is looking forward to create a final season that will “honor” their cast, crew and followers. She also dropped a little spoiler saying that “in the Girls universe, nothing ever ends too neatly”.
HBO president Michael Lombardo also echoed his thoughts about the success of the series. "Lena Dunham and her brilliant collaborators, including Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner, have given HBO a signature series of rare wit and intelligence," he commented.
Since it debuted in 2012, Girls has become a critical darling and a cultural phenomenon. Over the past four years, it has been one of HBO’s multi-awarded scripted series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Girls bagged its first Emmy win in 2012 for casting. It also received a Golden Globe for best comedy the year after.
Per Deadline, Girls hails from prolific producer Judd Apatow. Set in New York City, the central story of the series focuses on a group of women in their 20s as they navigate their individual lives. Major portions of the main character, Hannah, were inspired from Dunham’s real life experiences.
Although the series was able to make a mark in television, it never became a top-performer in ratings.
Girls season 5 is slated to premiere on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 10PM.
