‘Lego Batman Movie’ competes with Guy Ritchie’s ‘King Arthur’ in February 2017 release date; Mariah Carey's role revealed

'Lego Batman Movie' is an upcoming computer-animated film intended as a spin-off of 2014's blockbuster hit 'The Lego Movie'. It will feature the voice of pop songstress Mariah Carey as the Mayor of Gotham City. The film will compete with big-budget films such as Guy Ritchie's 'Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur' also set for release on February 2017.

Songstress and pop icon Mariah Carey is confirmed to be lending her voice in the new spin-off film for 'The Lego Movie'. Deadline reported that she has been given the role of Commissioner Gordon, a police commissioner in Batman's home Gotham City. The announcement was puzzling since the original Commissioner Gordon is obviously a man who shares a deep commitment for Batman's cause of ridding their city of villains.

However, another article by The Hollywood Reporter clarified that Carey will be playing the Mayor of Gotham City and not Commissioner Gordon. She joins fellow A-listers for the upcoming animated action-comedy film including Will Arnett (Batman), Rosario Dawson (Batgirl), Michael Cera (Robin), Ralph Fiennes (Alfred the Butler) and Zach Galifianakis (Joker). Carey's last big-screen appearance was on 2013's 'The Butler' where she was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

The upcoming animated film is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on February 10, 2017 and will share the release date with another highly anticipated film 'Fifty Shades Darker', the sequel to 2015's erotic drama film. 'Fifty Shades Darker' won't be the only potential blockbuster hit in the February 2017 roster. According to Forbes, 'Lego Batman Movie' will battle it out with the likes of Wes Ball's 'Maze Runner: Death Cure', Joe Carnahan's 'Bad Boys III' and Guy Ritchie's 'Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur'.

'Lego Batman Movie' is an upcoming animated comedy-action film directed by Chris McKay based on the screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith. It will feature the return of Will Arnett as Batman and is currently in pre-production. It is intended as a spin-off film of 2014's 'The Lego Movie'.
