Twentieth Century Fox is now making its own shared universe by expanding their classic Alien film in the next few years. Ridley Scott is directing his first Prometheus sequel, Prometheus 2 or also known as Alien: Covenant. Meanwhile, District 9 director Neil Blomkamp will be making a movie tentatively entitled as Alien 5.
Neil Blomkamp has been widely recognized with his films; Chappie and District 9.The sci-fi movie director has been handed a new sequel to a long-running classic franchise; the Alien franchise. Alien 5 will be the sequel to of Ridley Scott's Alien and not James Cameron's Alien.
Alien 5 is still shrouded in secrecy since the project has been placed in indefinite hold. Neil Blomkamp's proposed story for the film Alien 5 was put on hold by Twentieth Century Fox due Ridley Scott's prequel Alien: Covenant.
However, this hasn't stopped the people involved from sharing what they know about the film. Michael Biehn, who played as Hicks in Aliens, spoke with Icons of Fright and spilled some beans. Biehn said that Neil Blomkamp's storyline is very much alive and will be the next priority for the studio following the completing of Alien Covenant. He said, "I know Ridley Scoot is doing his movie first and is going to be the executive producer on this one, so I'm really looking forward to that. I know that Ridley's focus is on the second Prometheus and I'm sure that he and Fox both don't want that Neil's movie to come out right next to each other."
Alien 5 won't resume pre-production until Prometheus 2 or Alien: Covenant is done shooting. It may be continued by next summer at the very earliest.
It is not rare for massive film series to release multiple installments within a year - like Warner Brother's DC and Marvel Studios. The Alien: Covenant was divisive, and perhaps the studio wants to see first how it performs with the audiences before releasing other films that is set in the same universe.
With Neil Blomkamp and Ridley Scott's involvement in the making Alien's cinematic universe, the franchise 'Alien 5' is expected to be more massive and more entertaining than the previous films
