As the premiere of the 12th season of hit NBC crime series "NCIS" is only a few weeks away, the cast of the show have started shooting for its premiere episode.

Meanwhile, executive producer Gary Glasberg revealed to TV Line several things that fans of the crime drama would be expectin in the upcoming season. He said that an unexpected closeness would transpire in the show between Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), who still grieves the demise of his father Jackson (played by the late Ralph Waite) and Timothy McGee (Sean Murray), who is still emotional with the departure of his ladylove Ziva David (Cote de Pablo). In the season premiere, Gibbs and McGee would be taking a big adventure to Russia, which would set the tone of the two's friendship throughout the season.

"We've got a really significant season opener that brings Gibbs and McGee to Russia for a really big story," Glasberg was quoted as saying.

The showrunner also expressed his excitement as he disclosed that the multi-awarded crime series will feature the origins of Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum) in episode 3, Enstarz said. He added that fans will discover Ducky's past and "see a younger David McCallum." Glasberg fell short of telling whether McCallum would undergo some sort of transformation to play his younger self and whether an actor would be playing the good doctor in the season.

Meanwhile, the stars of the show are obviously excited with the upcoming season that they even shared behind-the-scenes photos on their social media accounts, Venture Capital Post noted. "I Am Number Four" star Emily Wickershap, who takes on the role of Ellie Bishop, recently posted a picture on social networking site Twitter showing a goofy Michael Weatherly (Tony Dinozzo). In the picture Weatherly seemed to be tossing a baby doll in the air, added a caption for good measure that read, "Not the babyyy!," Weatherly himself has also recently shared a photo on the same social networking website. The 47-year-old actor posted a Twitter photo on July 20 with a caption that read, "Guess what season it is? #NCISisBACK," showing him in a suit while holding a gun.

Season 12 of the phenomenal CBS series will hit the small screen on September 23, Tuesday.
