The Android security update February patch finally hits Nexus 6P, Google Pixel and certain Blackberry models. In fact, Google already posted the over-the-air packaged security update files as well as its full system image.
According to GSMArena, initial reports on the imminent patch release on Nexus 6P and Pixel models were originally announced by telecommunications company Telus. The source also mentions that the Blackberry Priv received the updates ahead of time.
Strangely enough, it seems that there are multiple devices that received the Android security update before Google's smartphone models. Google's phone models usually get updated before the rest since the tech company manages the operating system.
However, for the February Android security update patch, this is not case this time around. According to Gadgets360, Sony began their firmware update prior to Google's February release.
The devices that received the early update includes Sony's Xperia XZ, Xperia X and X Compact models. This not only implements the February Android security update, it also includes performance improvements as well.
In addition, the previous source revealed that certain Motorola phones and the Samsung GS5 Neo released their Android security update before February. It appears that other tech companies are speeding up their production efforts in terms of security updates.
As for what the Android security update fixes, there are several addressed issues posted on the Android Security Bulletin. This includes a fix for a certain critical security vulnerability.
This security threat can remotely execute command codes on smartphones when users process media files over the internet, email or MMS. Although Google had no reports of such exploitative incidents yet, they urge users to update their unit to the February patch.
Among the addressed issues include elevation of privilege vulnerability (media, audio etc...), information disclosure vulnerability (emails, messaging etc...) and a denial of service vulnerability. Android security update patches for the other Android devices should be launching over-the-air soon.
