‘Edge of Tomorrow 2’: Production to possibly begin late 2017; Doug Liman returns as director

'Edge of Tomorrow 2' is a yet untitled sequel to the 2014 science-fiction film of the same name. Production is rumored to begin sometime in late 2017 under returning director Doug Liman.

According to Den of Geek, screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse have been recruited to work on the sequel intended to begin production sometime in late 2017. The two are best known for penning the upcoming biographical drama film 'Race' about South African athlete Jesse Owens. Shrapnel and Waterhouse also co-wrote 'The Gray Man' adaptation, a film project to be directed by Christopher McQuarrie.

McQuarrie was previously tagged as the upcoming sequel's director, according to Independent. The filmmaker and writer co-wrote the original 2014 film together with Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth. He also worked on other collaborations with Cruise including 'Jack Reacher', 'Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation' and 'Valkyrie'.

However, according to another article by /Film, McQuarrie denied helming 'Edge of Tomorrow 2' and announced that Liman will be returning as director instead. He addressed rumors by taking on social media to bear the news. His Twitter post dated April 8 read, "Correction: I am NOT directing The sequel to Edge of Tomorrow. Doug Liman is. I will be involved but there's no Edge without Doug."

The original film starred Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in the lead roles. It was adapted from the Japanese light novel 'All You Need Is Kill' by Hiroshi Sakurazaka with illustrations by Yoshitoshi Abe published in 2004.

It followed Cruise as a public relations officer ordered to film an impending first wave alien invasion. He joined forces with a Special Forces officer portrayed by Blunt to defeat the aliens. Interestingly enough, Cruise's character finds himself in a continuous time loop every time he is killed in combat since he is resurrected to the day before the invasion in order to fight again.

'Edge of Tomorrow 2' is a planned science-fiction action film intended as the sequel to Doug Liman's 2014 film of the same name. Its predecessor took in $370 million at the box office and received largely positive feedback from critics. The original film also earned numerous awards and nominations including an Empire Award nomination for Best Actress for Blunt.
