'The Mummy' reboot has officially commenced filming in England. Unofficial photographs from the filming set in Oxford offered the first look at Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis' lead characters in the upcoming film.
According to MovieWeb, new unofficial photographs from on-set were recently leaked and showed the first look at leads Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis. The cast and crew of Alex Kurtzman's upcoming horror-adventure film are currently in Oxford, England for principal photography.
Cruise will be playing lead protagonist Tyler Colt, A Navy Seal officer on a mission in Iraq who eventually discovers the legendary monster. Wallis is set to take on a yet unnamed role. Varying reports suggested that she would either be playing an archaeologist or perhaps a scientist.
Sofia Boutella of 'Kingsman: Secret Service' fame is set to play the main villain and titular character. It would be the first time an actress will be portraying the role as the Mummy has always been played by males. Jake Johnson of 'New Girl' fame was also cast in a yet unnamed part that will serve as the film's comedic relief.
According to the Daily Mail, 'The Mummy' reboot is part of a planned shared monster universe under Universal Pictures. The first film released in the franchise was 2014's 'Dracula Untold' by director Gary Shore. It starred Luke Evans as the titular Count Dracula and was met with mixed reviews from critics.
The shared monster universe intends to bring all classic monster films into one big franchise, according to Dread Central. 'The Mummy' is only one of the films that will be getting the reboot treatment.
Kurtzman will be directing a script penned by Jon Spaihts. Kurtzman will also serve as producer together with Sean Daniel, Chris Morgan and Roberto Orci. Sarah Bradshaw, Bobby Cohen and Barbara Muschietti will be executive producing.
'The Mummy' reboot is an upcoming adventure-fantasy film intended as part of Universal's shared monster universe. It will feature Tom Cruise in the lead role. It is scheduled to be released on June 9, 2017.
