'Star Wars 8' actress Daisy Ridley finally addressed rumors regarding her character's parents and possible Jedi lineage. She plays Rey, a female human scavenger, who emerged as one of the 'Star Wars' franchise's newest lead protagonist.
According to MTV, Ridley finally responded to rumors emerging online regarding her parents as well as Jedi lineage. It was previously reported that the upcoming spin-off film 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' may be setting up Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso as Rey's mother.
Ridley addressed the fan theories during an interview backstage at the MTV Movie Awards. She said, "I'm not being funny you guys, but just because she's white and got brown hair... it doesn't mean she's my mom." Although the actress admitted that she has been informed of her character's actual parentage, she refused to elaborate further on details.
An article on Inverse suggested of an ongoing debate that followed Jyn Erso's emergence on the franchise. The non-conformist thief-turned-rebel on 'Rogue One' has been linked to Rey because of her physical appearance and abilities. However, these theories remain baseless.
According to GameSpot, Ridley expressed her bewilderment over the brewing fan theories behind her character's mysterious origins. She said, "I think the amazing thing about Episode VII is that Finn and Rey don't come from anywhere and they find a place... To me, it's funny that people think [Rey's lineage] is so important, because I guess it is. But I don't really think it is because regardless of where you come from, where you go is the thing...you're moving forward, and you can make a family; you can find people who you love."
It remains unclear whether Rian Johnson's 'Star Wars 8' will explore Rey's backstory. However, it was reported that the film will follow where 'Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens' left off. Other theories speculated that Rey will be trained by Luke Skywalker to become a Jedi knight.
Ridley responded to these claims by saying, "I don't know if I am a Jedi... I don't think I am... We've had this debate as to whether Leia is because she uses her Force powers... Just because she's not like, oh I'm going on an adventure like Luke doesn't make her any less Forceful."
'Star Wars 8' is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film written and directed by Rian Johnson. It stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Benicion del Toro, Gwendoline Christie, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. It is scheduled to be released on December 15, 2017.
