‘X-Men: Apocalypse’: Director hints Dark Phoenix storyline, budding romance between Cyclops and Jean Grey

'X-Men: Apocalypse' may feature the origins of the Cyclops-Jean Grey romance as revealed by director Bryan Singer. The filmmaker also hinted at a possible reference to the Dark Phoenix saga, originally told in the Marvel comic books.

According to Collider, Singer revealed a few details on the upcoming romance between Tye Sheridan's Cyclops and Sophie Turner's Jean Grey. The filmmaker said, "In the beginning, she's the last thing he's interested in... When he first comes to the mansion, Scott's blind so he can't see her. Suddenly he gets some glasses and now he can see her and he's like 'Oh! That's Jean Grey.' Both of them are misfits in a way. Other mutants have settled in with their powers."

Singer hinted that both young mutants will struggle to assimilate into their new environment as well as their powers. He added, "And Jean she has not only has her telekinesis and her telepathy but she also knows inherently that something darker and more powerful is growing inside her and she doesn't quite know what it is."

According to Comic Book Resources, Singer's comments hinted at a possible Dark Phoenix storyline for 'X-Men: Apocalypse'. Marvel's original 'Dark Phoenix Saga' focused entirely on Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force, the so-called "child of the universe" and nexus of psionic energy. The storyline was referenced in 'X-Men: The Last Stand', where Jean Grey struggled with the entity's immense and highly dangerous powers.

Singer planned to explore the 'Dark Phoenix Saga' originally, according to an article on Moviepilot, but failed to follow through when he failed to return to the franchise for the third X-Men film due to conflicts with Fox. In the original comic books, Dark Phoenix emerged after Jean Grey became the target of illusionist Mastermind, who corrupted the Phoenix entity.

'X-Men: Apocalypse' is an upcoming fantasy-adventure and superhero film directed by Bryan Singer. It follows the emergence of the ancient mutant Apocalypse bringing with him the power to destroy all of humanity to create a new world. It is scheduled to be released on May 27, 2016.
