'Suicide Squad' is an upcoming action film directed and written by David Ayer. It takes its viral promotion stint to new heights by partnering with the ongoing SXSW conference in Austin. Character tattoos will be made available at the event with each cast member getting their own unique design.
According to USA Today, the cast members of the upcoming "supervillains-turned-antiheroes" film in DC's shared cinematic universe unveiled their unique character-inspired tattoo designs just recently on their various Twitter accounts.
The posts were captioned with variations of "The #SuicideSquad is coming to #SXSW let's see who's bad enough to get inked #HarleysTattooParlor." Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn in the new film, previously set-up a makeshift tattoo parlor on the filming set thus bring the name "Harley's Tattoo Parlor" to life.
This year's South by Southwest convention (SXSW) commenced last March 11 and will wrap up on the 20th. It is currently taking place in Austin, Texas. The massive event, which began in 1987 and has been growing in scope ever since, hosts one of the biggest music festivals in the world as well as a technology discussion and film convention.
According to Entertainment Weekly, cast members including Robbie, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevigne, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Karen Fukuhara debuted their respective tattoo designs for the upcoming SXSW tie-in promotion. It seems highly though unlikely that Robbie herself will be manning what could be an official tattoo booth for "Harley's Tattoo Parlor". It is also unclear whether the tattoo service announced would give out real ones or just temporary stick-ons.
The respective designs featured in an article by i09 shows the uniqueness of each of the upcoming film's characters. Fukuraha's Katana, for example, has a Japanese-inspired tattoo bearing her signature mask and swords. Jay Hernandez' El Diablo has a Hell's Angels-type tattoo complete with a flaming skull with a scythe on its forehead.
The upcoming superhero film follows an unusual formula for its story line. It attempts to break free from the stereotypical barriers of good versus evil. 'Suicide Squad' follows a group of dangerous supervillain inmates as they are recruited to work for the government in exchange for pardon.
David Ayer serves as the writer and director on the film intended the third installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Principal photography began in April 2015 in Toronto and Ontario with additional shots taken in Chicago.
'Suicide Squad' is an action-adventure and fantasy film scheduled to be released on August 5, 2016. It is currently in post-production.
