'Hellboy 3' is a planned superhero film intended as the third installment in the cinematic series directed by Guillermo del Toro. Ron Perlman, who plays the titular good demon, offered a vague yet pessimistic update for the sequel. Del Toro himself hinted that the project may push through if 'Pacific Rim 2' is greenlit.
According to The Independent, Perlman spoke with Variety during promotion for the series 'Amazon Prime's Hand of God'. He said, "[Hellboy 3] probably will never happen... though you never say never never." The update seemed pessimistic yet hopeful at the same time, confusing fans of director Guillermo del Toro's supernatural action-thriller cinematic series based on the Dark Horse comics of the same name by Mike Mignola.
Perlman appeared on the 2004 release of 'Hellboy' as well as its 2008 sequel 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army' as the titular superhero. The actor was a big supporter of a potential follow-up since then.
Del Toro himself commented that he would give the third installment the green light should his other project 'Pacific Rim 2' push through. However, 'Pacific Rim 2' is also currently going through development hell and is on the transition for a new director.
According to another article by Polygon, Perlman expressed his frustration over the stalled sequel. He said, "We are obligated as filmmakers to give it [the final movie] to the audience." He admitted that he didn't care if it was going to be an "$8 million indie film" as long as the trilogy is completed.
The first film earned $99 million, against a $66 million budget and was favorably received by critics. It was released on April 2004 and featured Perlman as a red-skinned demonic creature employed by the fictional Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense.
Hellboy is endowed with superior strength as well as accelerated healing properties. He carries a variety of items and weapons in addition to his superhuman abilities, with the most recognizable Right Arm of Doom and the hand cannon called the Samaritan.
Perlman remained strong in his obligation to the loyal fans of the series despite the uncertain fate of 'Hellboy 3', according to The Hollywood Reporter. He said, "My attitude is that if you do your job right, and you're ballsy and original, and then you still don't find an audience, then you need to pick yourself up, brush yourself off and do the next one. As an artist, you shouldn't walk away from integrity."
