'Silence' is an upcoming historical drama film directed by Martin Scorsese. It is based on the 1966 novel by Shusaku Endo and is set to be released sometime in the end of 2016. The film is predicted as an Oscar contender, albeit prematurely, for the 2017 Academy Awards.
According to Awards Daily, Scorsese's upcoming historical drama starring Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and Liam Neeson is set to be released sometime in the end of 2016. This makes the film premiere just in time for awards season, specifically for the 2017 Academy Awards.
Producer Irwin Winkler confirmed the news during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Winkler admitted that cast and crew members all "worked for scale". He explained, "It was very, very expensive, and it was budgeted, because it takes place in 1670 in Japan. We got lucky and found out about Taipei, and in and around Taipei and Taiwan, we found great, great locations. The prices were very cheap, and we were able to make it for a price. And all the actors, Liam Neeson, Adam Driver, everybody worked for scale. Marty worked for scale, I worked for under scale."
It seems that Scorsese, despite his storied career in the filmmaking industry, still had to prove to financiers that his projects are worth the investments. Nevertheless, 'Silence' is already predicted as a good Oscars contender considering the brilliant talents working behind it. According to NY Daily News, rumored favorites for the Academy Awards include 'Birth of a Nation', 'The Founder', 'Sully', 'The Zookeeper's Wife' and 'Florence Foster Jenkins'.
The upcoming film is based on the novel by Shusaku Endo and is set in early 17th century Japan. According to The Playlist, it follows two Jesuit priests as they set out for Japan to find their mentor as well as spread their Christian religion despite the threat of persecution. Garfield plays Father Sebastião Rodrigues, Driver plays Father Francisco Garrpe and Neeson plays Father Cristóvão Ferreira.
