'Blade Runner 2' is an upcoming neo-noir science-fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve. It is scheduled to premiere in theaters on January 2018. Ridley Scott, who directed the original film back in the '80s, exclaimed that the script is ready and is "damn good".
According to Deadline, Denis Villeneuve's upcoming sequel to the 1982 cult favorite first directed by Ridley Scott finally has a release date scheduled for January 12, 2018. The debut falls under the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. It seems that no other potential blockbuster film will compete with the highly anticipated sequel since only Paramount's animated sequel 'Sherlock Gnomes' falls in the MLK schedule.
Principal photography for the yet untitled 'Blade Runner 2' project will begin sometime in July 2016 ahead of the newly announced target release date. Scott himself revealed during a previous interview that he worked with writer Hampton Fancher to start the project under Alcon Entertainment after the studio acquired its rights. Fancher wrote the screenplay for Scott's original release.
He said, "I was going to get writers, but decided to call up my old buddy Hampton Fancher because he walks the walk and talks the talk... We came up with a nice tight target. He said he wouldn't write the screenplay, but wrote a short novel. This was one of the writers I had the best experience with, on the original Blade Runner, meeting him every day, polishing the script. We'd solve one problem and there would be another. It drove him crazy but what happened is that what started off as a small contained play inside an apartment, and into an epic."
Scott also revealed that he couldn't helm the second film since because of scheduling conflicts with his other film, 'Prometheus'. However, he admitted that that they have already written the script and that it was "damn good". According to IGN, he hinted, "Of course it involves Harrison [Ford], who is a survivor after all these years-despite the accident (a joking reference to Ford's Star Wars injury). So yes, that will happen."
Ford will be reprising his role as ex-police officer Rick Deckard and will be joined by franchise newcomer Ryan Gosling. Gosling's role in the sequel has not yet been confirmed but it was rumored that he would possibly portray a young Rick Deckard.
According to Variety, 'Blade Runner 2' will continue several years after the events of the original 1982 film, which was set in dystopian Los Angeles in the year 2019. Acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins has come on board to work on the upcoming film.
