‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot: Official trailer out for July 2016 release; Fans disappointed by “racist” casting choices

By

'Ghostbusters' is an upcoming reboot of the original supernatural comedy franchise from the 1980s. The first official trailer has been released featuring the new all-female cast including Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy as the new breed of ghostbusters. Pro-diversity groups showed their disappointment over the "racist" casting choices.

According to USA Today, the first official trailer for Paul Feig's upcoming 'Ghostbusters' all-female reboot has been released and introduced the four new heroines including Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Viewers were also treated by Chris Hemsworth's appearance as Kevin the receptionist in what is an interesting twist in traditional gender roles.

The trailer also featured reimagined supernatural entities unlike the nostalgic ghostly blobs of the original television series and films as well as the iconic green ectoplasm from the yesteryears. The first full scene from the teaser paid tribute to a scene from the original 1984 film starring Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson, which was set in the New York Public Library.

According to The Mirror, Feig's reboot is set in New York City, some 30 years after the original cinematic series. The director admitted in a previous interview, "My favourite thing to do is work with funny women... And then I thought, well, what if we just make it new? It's not coming into the world that existed before." He previously worked with Wiig and McCarthy on the Golden Globe-nominated romantic comedy film 'Bridesmaids' back in 2011.

Several pro-diversity campaigners called out against the allegedly "racist" casting choices for the four female leads complaining that the three white women were educated while the Jones' character was merely a "loud and sassy" sidekick. According to E! Online, Wiig and McCarthy's characters are book authors while McKinnon's is a nuclear engineer. Jones' character, meanwhile, was a transportation employee.

Jones defended Feig's film by lashing out at several Twitter haters. She said in one post, "If they made me a scientist you would be mad at what type of scientist. Seriously it's a f--king movie get over yourself." She responded to another by saying, "Why can't a regular person be a Ghostbuster?... Regular People save the world everyday so if I'm the stereotype!! Then so be it!! We walk among Heroes and take them for granted... IT'S NOT A MAN, WOMAN, RACE, CLASS THANG!! ITS A GHOSTBUSTER THANG!! AND AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED WE ALL GHOSTBUSTERS!! STAND TALL!!"

'Ghostbusters' is an upcoming supernatural comedy co-written and directed by Paul Feig. It is scheduled to be released on July 15, 2016.
