'Robin Hood: Origins' is an upcoming adventure film starring 'Kingsman' lead actor Taron Egerton as well as Jamie Fox and Eve Hewson. It is set to compete with two other Robin Hood projects from Disney and Sony.

According to Deadline, Foxx has joined Lionsgate's reimagining of the classic English tale of a heroic outlaw highly skilled in archery as well as swordsmanship. The 48-year old actor, singer and comedian will star alongside Taron Egerton and Eve Hewson, who will portray Robin Hood and Maid Marian respectively.

Foxx is set to play Little John, a war veteran of the Crusades who, in the film, starts out as distrustful towards Robin Hood but eventually allies with him. In the original folklore, Little John is known to be Robin's chief lieutenant as well as the second-in-command of the band of Merry Men. Although his name implies one of shorter stature, he is in fact a seven-foot tall warrior who uses a bow and quarterstaff during combat.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox recently finished filming 'Sleepless Night' with Swiss director Baran bo Odar. He is also set to star in the upcoming action comedy film written and directed by Edgar Wright and scheduled to be released in 2017. He is best known for his work on several critically acclaimed films including 2012's 'Django Unchained', 2004's 'Ray' and 'Collateral' as well as 1999's 'Any Given Sunday'.

Otto Bathurst of 'Peaky Blinders' is set to direct 'Robin Hood: Origins' based on a screenplay by Joby Harold, who also worked for films such as 'Awake' and 'Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur'. Academy Award-winner Leonardo DiCaprio is set to produce the film together with Jennifer Davisson of Appian Way, Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safe House as well as Basil Iwanyk.

Meanwhile, according to /Film, Lionsgate's version of the Robin Hood's story will not be the only film coming out next year. 'Robin Hood: Origins' will be competing with two other projects - one from Sony, entitled 'Hood' and another one from Disney, entitled 'Nottingham & Hood'. It was speculated that Sony may pick up the rights to 'Robin Hood: Origins' to merge it with 'Hood'.

'Robin Hood: Origins' is an upcoming adventure film intended as a reimagining of the English folklore of a hero named Robin Hood. Taron Egerton of 'Kingsman' fame is set to play the titular character, with Jamie Foxx as Little John and Eve Hewson as Maid Marian. It will be released sometime in 2017.
