‘Deadpool 2’ to keep a simple yet “zany” story; Writers talks timeline issues with ‘X-Men’ cinematic universe

'Deadpool 2' is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film intended as the follow-up to Tim Miller's 2016 release of the same name. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed that they will keep to the sequel's budgetary constraints with a simple yet "zany" story. They also addressed timeline issues with the 'X-Men' cinematic universe.

According to MovieWeb, Reese and Wernick have already begun writing the new screenplay for the upcoming sequel to the blockbuster hit 'Deadpool'. It is set to feature the return of Ryan Reynolds as the titular Merc with a Mouth as well as new characters and new story lines while keeping to its relatively humble budget.

The first film, released this month, was created with a budget of $58 million but became the highest-grossing film for one with an R-rating in North America. It broke numerous other box office records - it even broke previous records held by preceding 'X-Men' films. It was also received with praise from critics and fans alike.

Wernick stressed that budgetary constraints will be taken into account for the sequel. He said, "We don't want $150 million to go make the next movie, that's not Deadpool. Deadpool doesn't lift cities up into the air or battle aliens coming down to earth, that's just not Deadpool. So we're happy in that little small budget range that they have us in; we don't wanna blow this next one out."

According to Collider, the first 'Deadpool' film could have attributed its success not to its budget-earnings phenomenon but towards pushing the boundaries of the superhero genre. Reese said that what made Deadpool endearing was his tendency to break the "fourth-wall" and his over-the-top personality.

He said, "There's so much zaniness that I think just having a clear throughline, a pretty simple story, not a ton of plot twists or weird things you have to try to figure out or understand, makes you able to just have fun with all that zaniness that you throw on top of it."

Reese also talked about how the 'Deadpool' standalone series would fit in with the complicated 'X-Men' timeline saying that these issues may need to be addressed for future films to work. According to /Film, Reese said that the characters created for the first film, Colossus and Negasonic, were fairly easy to do since they weren't very major characters in the 'X-Men' cinematic series.

He added, "...but if you start talking about Professor X or Beast you do start running into timeline issues and we're gonna need guidelines on that."

'Deadpool 2' is an upcoming action-adventure and science-fiction film intended as the follow-up to the 2016 release of the same name. The original release starred Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano, T.J. Miller, Stefan Kapicic and Rachel Sheen.
