Originally scheduled to be released on November 13, 2015, it has been pushed back twice - from April 1, 2016 to the latest release date October 28, 2016. 'The Ring' sequel, otherwise called 'Rings', will compete with the upcoming 'Da Vinci Code' sequel entitled 'Inferno' as well as an untitled Lionsgate horror film in the same release slot.
The upcoming film is set 13 years after the events of 2002's 'The Ring', according to /Film. The original film, directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Naomi Watts, was based on the 1998 Japanese film 'Ringu'. 'Ringu' itself was adapted from the original novel 'Ring' written by Koji Suzuki.
The first film in the trilogy grossed over $249 million against a production budget of $48 million. It was received with generally positive reviews from critics and earned a Saturn Award and a Teens Choice Award for Best Movie Horror.
F. Javier Gutierrez is set to direct the film with the screenplay penned by Jacob Aaron Estes, Akiva Goldsman and David Loucka, according to MovieWeb. It will star newcomers Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz and Alex Roe, with Johnny Galecki portraying a college professor.
Aimee Teegarden, Laura Wiggins, Andrea Laing, and Zach Roerig make up the rest of the new cast. Bonnie Morgan, actress and professional contortionist, will return as the antagonist Samara Morgan. Morgan appeared on 2005's 'The Ring 2' released in 2005.
Morgan provided stunts for films such as 'Minority Report' and 'Fright Night'. She was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture for her work on 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army'.
