Ridley Scott's ‘Blade Runner 2’ begins filming in July with director Denis Villeneuve, lead stars Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling

'Blade Runner 2' is the sequel to Ridley Scott's original film released in 1982. It will begin filming in July 2016 with director Denis Villeneuve. Harrison Ford is confirmed to be returning as Rick Deckard alongside series newcomer Ryan Gosling.

According to The Daily Mail, filming for the upcoming second installment in the neo-noir science-fiction series will begin in July 2016. It was recently announced that Sony Pictures will handle international distribution for the film.

Sony Pictures Chairman Tim Rothman said in a statement, 'At Sony, we have made a strong commitment to the international marketplace... We know of few projects with greater international potential than the long dreamed of sequel to Blade Runner, especially given the all-star creative team Andrew and Broderick have assembled... We are deeply grateful to everyone at Alcon, Denis and Ridley for entrusting us with such a gift. Working on a Blade Runner film also fulfills a long-time personal ambition, as I deeply love and admire the original.'

Warner Bros. distributing for North America and Canada through Alcon Entertainment. Alcon Entertainment acquired the rights for 'Blade Runner' back in 2011.

Director Denis Villeneuve will be helming the new film with Hampton Fancher and Michael Green penning the new screenplay. Broderick Johnson, Andrew A. Kosove, Bud Yorkin, Cynthia Sykes Yorkin and Ridley Scott will be producing the film while Bill Carraro, Tim Gamble and Frank Glustra will be executive producing. Award-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins has also signed on to the new project.

According to Variety, the film's new plot will reportedly take place several decades following the events of Ridley Scott's original film released in 1982. The first film, 'Blade Runner', took place in dystopian Los Angeles in the year 2019 and was based on Philip K. Dick's short story 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'

Harrison Ford, who played the lead protagonist in Scott's film, is confirmed to return in the sequel alongside series newcomer Ryan Gosling. According to Eqsuire, Ford will reprise his role as Rick Deckard, a special member of the L.A. Police Department who was tasked at pursuing replicants that reached earth illegally.

'Blade Runner 2' is a planned science-fiction film intended as a sequel to Ridley Scott's original film from the 1980s. Denis Villeneuve is directing the new film that will feature the return of Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard. Series newcomer Ryan Gosling will star alongside Ford.
