‘Wonder Woman’ battles ‘Transformers 5’ in June 2017 release date; Jaimie Alexander offered lead role but wanted Marvel over DC

'Wonder Woman' is an upcoming action-adventure standalone film starring Gal Gadot in the lead role. The film will take up a battle with 'Transformers 5' on the same June 2017 release date. Meanwhile, Jaimie Alexander revealed that she was offered the lead role of Wonder Woman but had to turn it down.

According to Deadline, Patty Jenkins' 'Wonder Woman' is up against Michael Bay's 'Transformers 5' in what could become an imminent box office battle for the opening weekend. Paramount Pictures announced that 'Transformers 5' is scheduled to be released on June 23, 2017 - a date already occupied by one of DC's most anticipated tie-in films of the year.

The 'Transformers' films tend to open big and crush the others opening on the same weekend. The science-fiction series collectively earned $3.7 billion in the international box office and is considered one of the highest-grossing film series in the industry.

The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) films are fairly new. It was first established in 2013 with 'Man of Steel' starring Henry Cavill and is currently flanked with future cinematic releases including 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice', 'Suicide Squad', 'Justice League' and of course, a standalone film for the iconic Amazonian warrior princess.

Meanwhile, actress Jaimie Alexander was offered the lead role for Wonder Woman but knew she didn't have a chance at getting the part. Alexander currently portrays the female warrior Sif in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

According to Cinema Blend, the actress pointed out the similarities between Gal Gadot's Diana Prince a.k.a. Wonder Woman and her own character Lady Sif in the 'Thor' live-action adaptations.

She said, "I was one of a few people that were an obvious choice for Wonder Woman, but it was never going to happen. I'm contracted with Marvel and it would (be) strange. Sif, in her way, is Marvel's Wonder Woman. They're both ethereal and have armor and a sword, and have special abilities; the physicality of the role is very similar."

According to Variety, Alexander may have been thrilled at the prospect of playing a lead character for the DC shared universe, but she admitted that she couldn't be more content with Lady Sif. She said that in the end, she still "gravitates towards the Marvel characters". She added, "I genuinely love the character Sif. Each time I get to play her, there's this growth in the character and we find out more of who she is."

'Wonder Woman' is an upcoming superhero film scheduled to be released on June 23, 2017. It is intended as the fourth installment in the DCEU.
