'Divergent: Ascendant' is an upcoming science-fiction action film starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James as lead protagonists Tris and Four, respectively. 'Insurgent' and 'Allegiant' director Robert Schwentke dropped out of the upcoming 'Ascendant' film prompting Lionsgate to quickly look for a replacement.
According to Deadline, 'Insurgent' and 'Allegiant' director Robert Schwentke has exited the franchise. It was reported that although the filmmaker remains in good graces with Lionsgate, the studio is now in need of a replacement to helm the last film in the science-fiction adventure cinematic series adapted from the bestselling young adult novels by Veronica Roth. Schwentke allegedly needed a much-needed rest after filming 'Insurgent' and 'Allegiant' back-to-back.
The German director is best known for his work on films such as 'Red', 'R.I.P.D.', 'Flightplan' and 'The Time Traveler's Wife'. He directed the second film 'The Divergent Series: Insurgent' released in March 2015 as well as the first part of the third film 'The Divergent Series: Allegiant', scheduled to be released on March 18, 2016. Neil Burger directed the original 'Divergent' film released in March 2014.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the fourth and final installment is set to begin principal photography in Atlanta sometime this summer in time for its June 2017 release. Lionsgate will have to move quickly to find a new director in time for the scheduled filming.
Meanwhile, new posters have been released for the upcoming 'Divergent: Allegiant' film. According to MovieWeb, it featured some of the main cast of characters including Shailene Woodley's Beatrice 'Tris' Prior, Theo James' Tobias 'Four' Eaton, Ansel Elgort's Caleb Prior, Zoe Kravitz' Christina and Miles Teller's Peter.
In the third film, Tris, Four and their group of allies escape the walled city of Chicago to discover shocking truths beyond. The two must quickly decide who to trust as a battle wages on beyond the walled city, which threatens to eradicate all of humanity. Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer and Naomi Watts return to reprise their respective roles while Jeff Daniels joins in as the villainous David.
'Divergent: Ascendant' is an upcoming science-fiction action film intended as the second part of the last installment in the cinematic trilogy based on novels of author Veronica Roth. It is scheduled to be premiere on June 9, 2017.
