'Furious 8' is an upcoming action-thriller film intended as the eighth installment in the 'Fast and Furious' franchise. Charlize Theron is reportedly eyed to play the series' newest main villain. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson officially confirmed the return of his character, Luke Hobbs.
According to The Guardian, Theron is reportedly being offered the role of the main villain for the sequel. It remains unknown if she has officially signed on to join returning stars Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez and Ludacris.
Theron recently won the Critics' Choice Movie Awards for Best Actress in an Action Movie for her role as the rebellious soldier Imperator Furiosa in George Miller's 'Mad Max: Fury Road'. The South African model and actress is best known for her work in films such as 'Cider House Rules', 'The Devil's Advocate', 'The Italian Job' and 'Mighty Joe Young' as well as 'Monster', where she won an Academy Award for Best Actress. She is currently filming her next film, 'The Coldest City', with director David Leitch.
According to another article by Variety, production for the eighth installment in the action franchise will begin next spring. It will be directed by F. Gary Grey of 'Straight Outta Compton' fame and produced by Diesel, Michael Fottrell and Neal H. Moritz with Chris Morgan executive producing. The upcoming film is reportedly the first in a planned trilogy that sees the end of the long-running franchise.
Meanwhile, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson recently confirmed his return as Luke Hobbs in an Instagram post featuring his training regime for upcoming roles. According to Comicbook.com, the post was captioned, "Real deal. Our 2016 shooting schedule is a grueling 12months straight of filming (Ballers, Baywatch, Fast & Furious 8 and the big one, Rampage) it requires me putting together a team of professionals from all areas of business who bring their own expertise to the table."
His character is one of the main protagonists in the 'Fast and Furious' series. He was introduced in 'Fast 5' as an agent of the Diplomatic Security Service tasked at hunting down Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto and Paul Walker's Brian O'Connor. He later became their ally in the fight against the Shaw Brothers.
