‘Assassin’s Creed’ Update: Ubisoft’s decision not to launch new game in 2016 may boost film’s box office success

'Assassin's Creed' is an upcoming live-action adaptation of Ubisoft's video game of the same name. Ubisoft announced that it will not be releasing a new video game in the franchise this year.

According to Gamespot, Ubisoft will not be launching a new video game in the franchise this year to the benefit of the upcoming live-action adaptation scheduled to be released on December 21, 2016.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said, "The movie guys are extremely happy we don't have a new game because they will have the full-year marketing space and they feel they will be able to do a better job at promoting the movie... With the great production expertise of New Regency and the fantastic marketing and distribution power of 20th Century Fox, the Assassin's Creed movie has the potential to be one of the biggest blockbusters of 2016."

Guillemot commended director Justin Kurzel as well as the film's ensemble cast including Oscar-nominee Michael Fassbender, Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard, Emmy-awardee Brendan Gleeson and Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons. Fassbender and Cotillard also starred together in Kurzel's big-screen adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Macbeth'.

According to another article by Game Rant, Guillemot said that fans of the original video games need not be distressed about the lack of new releases for the year as they are currently re-examining the franchise based on user feedback.

A message from Ubisoft's team read, "We've also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin's Creed a premier open-world franchise... We're taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we're delivering on the promise of Assassin's Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone's playground."

The upcoming 'Assassin's Creed' film will feature Fassbender in back-to-back roles as the main protagonist Callum Lynch as well as his ancestor Aguilar. According to We Got This Covered, the film follows Callum Lynch as he travels back in time to 15th Century Spain in order to explore the memories of his ancestor, who was a member of the Spanish Brotherhood of Assassins.

The actor previously likened the film to the Watchowski Brothers' cult trilogy 'The Matrix'. It is also reportedly putting more emphasis on practical effects as opposed to the use of special effects, with the director using "very little green screen".

'Assassin's Creed' is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film scheduled to be released on December 21, 2016. It is adapted from the popular Ubisoft video games of the same name.
