‘Riddick 4’: Rated-R origin story begins filming next year; Vin Diesel developing spin-off series with Universal TV

'Riddick 4' is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film intended to be the fourth installment in the franchise created in 2000. The sequel is allegedly going to be an R-rated origin story set in Riddick's homeland, Furia. Vin Diesel is under negotiations to develop a spin-off companion television series with Universal TV.

According to Screen Rant, the fourth installment in the 'Chronicles of Riddick' franchise will be an R-rated origin story. Writer and director David Twohy has reportedly started work on a possible screenplay that told the story of Riddick's return to his home world, Furia, which was referenced in previous films. It was speculated that the actual film could split back and forth between real time and flashbacks.

Diesel talked about the new film in a short video message saying that an R-rating would be more appropriate for it, despite the preceding films being PG-13. According to Empire, the 48-year old action star may have also revealed the upcoming film's running title as 'Furia' on his Facebook page.

Twohy will begin principal photography with Diesel and the rest of the cast and crew for the upcoming project sometime in early 2017. The lengthy delay may be attributed to Diesel's full line-up of future films.

He is attached to star in 'Fast and Furious 8', 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' as well as 'XXX 3: The Return of Xander Cage'. He also celebrated the recent birth of his third child with model Paloma Jimenez.

Meanwhile, the popular cinematic franchise may be heading to the small screen as well since Diesel is under negotiations with Universal TV for a possible spin-off television series for 'Riddick'. According to Variety, this series will "compliment" its movie counterpart.

Jennifer Stalke of NBC Entertainment announced, "In addition to being a huge star for our feature division, Vin is a true creative force as a producer. After sitting down with him and his team at One Race Television, it's clear he will now also be an incredible asset to both the network and our television studio... We feel really fortunate to be in business with, not only an international powerhouse, but a truly thoughtful and passionate producer."

The television series will be set in the 'Riddick' universe and is entitled 'Merc City'. It would focus on mercs and bounty hunters featured in the previous films in the franchise.

'Riddick 4' is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film intended as the fourth installment in the 'Chronicles of Riddick' franchise created in 2000. The series follows the titular character Riddick, portrayed by Vin Diesel, in a fictional universe set in the 28th Century. David Twohy, who directed 'Pitch Black', 'Chronicles of Riddick' and 'Riddick', will be returning to write and helm the new film.
