‘Han Solo’ gets May 2018 release after ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’; Miles Teller, Dave Franco shortlisted for lead role

'Han Solo' is an upcoming science-fiction adventure film intended as a spin-off of the popular 'Star Wars' franchise. It is slated to be released in May 2018, after the premiere Rian Johnson's 'Star Wars: Episode VIII'. Although no official confirmation has been made regarding the actor playing the young Han Solo, Miles Teller and Dave Franco are reportedly in the shortlist of potential candidates.

According to Paste Magazine, the upcoming spin-off film for one of the Star Wars franchise's most iconic characters is set to be released in May 2018. It is currently in pre-production and will be the titular protagonist's origin story.

Han Solo is most famously portrayed by Harrison Ford. The smuggler and eventual leader of the Alliance to Restore the Republic was first introduced in George Lucas' 1977 film 'Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope'. He appeared in succeeding films including 'Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi'.

Ford reprised his role as Han Solo in the most recent 'Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens' with co-stars Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher as Luke Skywalker and General Leia Organa, respectively.

Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that the upcoming spin-off is part of a planned anthology of standalone films. According to The Independent, the news came after an update for 'Rogue One', the first film in the series in the Star Wars Universe. He said, "This is the first of a set of planned stand-alone stories... we're already in preproduction on our next one, for release in May of 2018."

Although there has been no official casting confirmation for the lead role of the young Han Solo, a new report revealed that Disney and LucasFilm already prepared a list of potential actors for the part. The candidates were stated in a previous report from December and included Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Jack Reynor and Scott Eastwood.

According to MovieWeb, the latest report claimed that Taron Egerton of 'Kingsman: The Secret Service' fame and Alden Ehrenreich of 'Hail, Caesar!' also tested for a part in the 'Han Solo' film. It was stated that the two auditioned separately as well as together indicating that they may be in contention for two very different roles. Speculations emerged that Han Solo may have a brother in the film.

'Han Solo' is a yet untitled film intended as part of the planned Star Wars anthology of standalone films. It will tell the origin story of the famous smuggler turned Resistance leader portrayed by Harrison Ford in the cinematic franchise created by George Lucas in the 1970s.
