'20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' is director Bryan Singer's remake of the classic Jules Verne novel of the same name. He is set to begin casting as well as begin principal photography in the fall.
According to Variety, Singer is moving forward with the latest live-action adaptation for Jules Verne's classic novel of the same name. 20th Century Fox has signed on to work on the remake. This will make it Singer's fifth film with Fox after directing Marvel's 'X-Men', 'X-Men: Days of Future Past', 'X-Men: Apocalypse' and historical thriller film 'Valkyrie'.
On September 17, 2015, Singer posted a photograph of the script on his personal Instagram page. It was captioned, "It's my 50th birthday (ouch), and I just put the finishing touches on the script for my next film. A story I've wanted to retell since childhood... I promise this will be an epic and emotional adventure for all ages! An adventure very dear to my heart. Not abandoning the #xmen universe. Very excited about #xmenapocalypse and beyond. #julesverne #20000leaguesunderthesea #nemo."
According to /Film, the film has been in development for quite some time. It was reported that Singer will begin principal photography in fall of this year and has begun casting for parts in his upcoming remake.
The 50-year old filmmaker expressed his enthusiasm over the project saying, "Ever since I was a boy and first discovered the 1870 Jules Verne novel, I have dreamt of retelling this classic story. Without revealing too much, it contains not only the original characters of Captain Nemo, Ned Land and Professor Aronnax, but also some new and original characters and Sci Fi plot twists culminating in a timeless adventure for all ages."
Verne's classic science-fiction novel published in 1870 is in the public domain and has been adapted for film and television through the years. It was turned into silent films in the early 1900's as well as adapted into a full-feature Technicolor film under Walt Disney. The 1954 Disney film directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Kirk Douglas is regarded as one of the most prominent adaptations of the book.
An article by First Showing stated that Singer worked with the film's script together with Rick Soderlet and Dan Studney. Singer will also be producing '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' with Jason Taylor, who heads Singer's Bad Hat Harry Productions.
