'Men In Black 4' a planned comedy and science-fiction film intended as the follow-up to the 2012 release directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. The upcoming film may feature a new female protagonist as well as the return of Will Smith to the franchise.

According to /Film, the fourth installment in the 'Men In Black' franchise may feature a new female lead protagonist. Producer Laurie McDonald dropped major news during an interview with BBC saying, "There will be a prominent woman in black in the fourth [film]."

Another article by Variety reported that the first film introduced Linda Fiorentino's agent L as part of the team but she was evidently missing in the next two follow-ups. Lara Flynn Boyle featured as a shapeshifting evil alien in 'MIB 2' while Emma Thompson played Agent O in 'MIB III'. The next possible leading lady remains unconfirmed as of the present.

The preceding films followed Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith as Agent Kevin Brown a.k.a. Agent K and Agent James Edwards III a.k.a. Agent J, respectively. Their characters were members of a top secret organization tasked at monitoring alien activity on earth.

Several speculations regarding Smith's departure from the series emerged since the sequel's announcement. However, according to Coming Soon, producer Walter Parks hinted that it was still possible to have the 47-year old actor back on board as the film is still in its early development phase.

He said, "Never count Will out... We sort of looked at the first three in retrospect as a bit of a trilogy. We tried to tell a story about those two characters and that relationship. It sounds silly because it's a fun, science fiction comedy but when you work on these things you sort of try to find some thematic basis underneath it. Now we are looking at a reinvention, but it's a wonderful world to get back into."

The first in the series, 'Men In Black', was released in 1997 and grossed $589 million at the box office. Its sequel, released in 2002, earned $441 million while the third film, released in 2012, earned $624 million. All three were considered solid box office successes.

'Men In Black 4' is a planned comedy and science-fiction film intended as a follow-up to director Barry Sonnenfeld's 2012 release. The franchise is based on Lowell Cunningham's comic book series of the same name published by Marvel and Malibu Comics. The first film received critical acclaim as well earned several nominations including the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.
