'NickToons' is an upcoming film that will feature classic cartoon characters from Nickelodeon. Director Jared Hess of 'Napoleon Dynamite' fame will helm the feature film as well as pen the screenplay together with wife Jerusha.

According to /Film, Hess has landed the role of writer and director for the new Nickelodeon full-feature film project that is said to be part-animation and part-live action. Hess will reportedly write the film with his wife and frequent collaborator Jerusha Hess.

The 36-year old director and his wife worked on several comedy films including 2004's 'Napoleon Dynamite', 2006's 'Nacho Libre' and 2009's 'Gentlemen Broncos'. Hess' newer projects include 'Masterminds' starring Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianiakis, Jason Sudeikis and Owen Wilson, as well as 'Don Verdean' starring Amy Ryan, Sam Rockwell and Danny McBride.

According to another article by Alt Press, the new film will be reminiscent of the 1988 cult classic film 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?' directed by Robert Zemeckis. A representative from Paramount Pictures announced, "The project comes at a time when there is renewed interest in Nickelodeon's library of characters from the last 25 years." Nickelodeon recently began re-airing old episodes from its roster of animated television series from the 1990s.

Some of the characters that may make it on the big-screen include those from cartoons like 'Hey Arnold', 'Rugrats', 'Ren and Stimpy', 'Aaahh!!! Real Monsters', and 'Rocko's Modern Life', according to an article by i09.com. Other possibilities include 'SpongeBob SquarePants', 'The Wild Thornberrys', 'CatDog' and 'Rocket Power'. It was also reported that the character crossover film will have its own original story and may be the first in a planned cinematic franchise.

'NickToons' is an upcoming film that will feature many characters from the animated library of Nickelodeon. It will be directed by Jared Hess and written by both Hess and his wife Jerusha. It is said to be both a live-action adaptation of the cartoons as well as an animated film.
