‘Captain America: Civil War’ may lead to Black Widow standalone movie: Directors tease budding romance for superhero

'Captain America: Civil War' may feature a budding romance between Chris Evans' Captain America and another Marvel character. It was speculated that he may have Sharon Carter as a new love interest. The film may also lead to a future Black Widow standalone film in the MCU.

According to Comic Book, Joe and Anthony Russo teased the possibility of Cap's romance with another Marvel character saying that it would be interesting to finally see the titular superhero get some action in his love life.

When asked about an interesting new love interest for Chris Evans' Captain America, Joe Russo admitted, "That falls under the surprise in the story as well, but we can only keep Cap romantically uninvolved for so long. At some point, something has to happen with that character, so we are very aware of his lack of romantic life. We want to keep dimensionalizing his character so maybe something interesting will happen."

Another article by Screen Rant reported that Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter a.k.a. Agent 13 may be Cap's likely love interest. VanCamp's character featured briefly in the preceding 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'.

In the comic books, Sharon Carter was introduced as an ex-field secret agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. under Nick Fury and known to be Captain America's girlfriend. She was supposedly Peggy Carter's younger sister but has been re-written for 'The Winter Soldier' as her niece.

Meanwhile, according to Entertainment Weekly, the Russo brothers expressed their enthusiasm over a possible Black Widow standalone film in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Joe Russo said, "We find that the character is one of the richest, if not the richest, character in the Marvel universe... She's a very complex character. She's haunted by demons and her understanding of the world is fascinating. I think there is a lot that can be done with that character."

Scarlett Johansson plays Natasha Romanov a.k.a. Black Widow in the MCU films. She admitted during a previous interview that she was happy with the audience's reception towards her interpretation of the character and their call for her own feature film.

She said, "Everything that I've done with the Widow, to me makes sense. It's in line with active decisions that I've made for the character. I've been able to develop this character very closely with Joss and [Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo]."

'Captain America: Civil War' is an upcoming action-adventure and superhero film directed by Joe and Anthony Russo based on a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. It is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 6, 2016. It is intended as part of the MCU's Phase Three.
