'The Maze Runner: The Death Cure' is an upcoming science-fiction film to be directed by Wes Ball. It is scheduled to be released for 2017 and won't be split into two parts. Author James Dashner revealed that the third installment will be about survival and testing friendships.

According to FirstShowing.net, 20th Century Fox scheduled the third and final installment in the Maze Runner cinematic series for February 17, 2017. Unlike the popular Hollywood strategy of dividing the concluding film in a trilogy into two, the last movie will stay intact. Film trilogies such as 'Harry Potter', 'The Twilight Saga' and 'Hunger Games' split their respective final films into two releases.

Director Wes Ball admitted that he and his team are working on making the third film stand out from the previous two, according to Collider. He said, "We're working on the third one right now, working to make it even better and even cooler, and doing the same thing we did on this last one where it's a different movie. It's gonna be a different kind of an engine, a different kind of genre almost and a different sort of color palette and terrain. It's gonna be cool. It's gonna be very, very cool I think." He also teased of his interest in filming in Vancouver.

According to Den of Geek, author James Dashner teased that the third film will get some "spectacular" action. He said, "Everything's gonna be on the table. The survival of the human race is on the line. The third film will be about revolution, and about loyalty being tested between friends." Dashner said that although the first and second films strayed away from the original novels, the third film will bring it story back in line.

'The Maze Runner: Death Cure' is an upcoming live-action adaptation of Dashner's third book in the young adult novels of the same name. It is scheduled to be released sometime in 2017 and will be directed by Wes Ball based on an adapted screenplay by T.S. Nowlin. The upcoming dystopian science-fiction film is intended as the sequel to 2015's 'The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials'.
