According to TheWrap, 20th Century Fox premiered the first official trailer for the upcoming science-fiction film on December 13 in time for its scheduled June 24, 2016 release. It is intended as the sequel to 1996's blockbuster hit of the same name that grossed $817 million in the box office. The upcoming film is set two decades after the events of the first dubbed 'The War of 1996'.
In the new film, the Earth has implemented advanced defense systems adapted from alien technology in preparation for future attacks from outer space. According to the Examiner, governments performed reverse engineering on salvaged alien forces to integrate extraterrestrial expertise in the creation of hybrid fighter planes and other weapons. However, unbeknownst to authorities, the aliens were able to send out a distress signal before their final defeat enabling an impending counter-attack on Earth.
Meanwhile, a newly launched website promoting 'Independence Day: Resurgence' detailed events of 'The War of 1996' and also revealed what happened to Will Smith's lead character from the original film. According to /Film, Warof1996.com revealed that Smith's Captain Steven Hiller met his tragic demise in 2007 after testing the world's first fighter plane equipped with alien technology.
