It's not an easy feat to break box office records and that's what Transformers 4: Age of Extinction did recently. The film, which was directed by Michael Bay preceded 2011's Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
Cinema Blend reported that the film is the first to make more than $1 billion at the global box office and that the $241 million was made in the United States, while the $763 million was raked from overseas. It added that the highest-grossing film so far in 2014 is X-Men: Days of Future Past which has made $739 million so far.
The lage number raked in at the box office was thanks in part to a massive movie showing in China, where, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Age of Extinction is the top-grossing film of all time with more than $300 million in ticket sales. The site also noted that it is the first film to ever cross the $300 million at the Chinese box office.
In addition, these numbers could get even higher as the film is not yet shown in some parts of the world, such as in Spain and Japan, where the film is set to come out on August 8th, and Venezuela, on August 22, said Deadline. It also noted that notable holdovers included Germany, where the film earned $30.5 million, making it the top movie of 2014, followed by France, where it earned $19.6 million, and Brazil, which accumulated $25.3 million.
Deadline added that Paramount Pictures had already extended its first-look deal with director-producer Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes. Moreover, Bay's films have made more than $6 billion worldwide, and his Transformers series includes two $1 billion+ grossers. The first movie in 2007 earned more than $700 million worldwide, and the sequel, Revenge of the Fallen, grossed more than $830 million in 2009.
Brad Grey, Paramount's Chairman and CEO said, "Time and again, Michael has delivered pictures that audiences around the globe truly love. Along with immensely talented and versatile Mark Wahlberg, the great Steven Spielberg as executive producer, and a superb cast, he created a powerful re-launch of this franchise. This tremendous accomplishment - to be the first film of 2014 to earn over $1 billion at the box office - proves onces gain that Michael is a world-class filmmaker at the top of his game. We are proud to have expanded our relationship wtih him and that he will continue to make Paramount his home for years to come."
