Maverick is confirmed to return to fly once again.

"Top Gun," the 1986 top grossing movie, which is starred by Tom Cruise, has recently been confirmed to proceed with production, Breathcast reported. On the other hand, there is no news yet as to when the sequel for the movie that catapulted the bedimpled actor into superstar status would be released in theaters. However, Paramount Pictures Production Head Adam Goddman stated that the release date of the film is the top priority of the people behind the sequel.

People reportedly have thought that plans for the "Top Gun" sequel will completely come to a stop after the death of its original director, Tony Scott, in 2012. Goodman has since said that the late director was the one who thought of the storyline, and that his passing also signaled the death of the "Top Gun" sequel. However, issues surrounding the development of the film, which include Cruise's reluctance to do the project and the studio's hesitation to commit to the production, have all been purportedly hashed out.

KPopstarz cited an interview with top producer Jerry Bruckheimer with the Huffington Post, who recently revealed their vision for the plot of "Top Gun 2." Bruckheimer hinted that the plot of the upcoming film would be in line to the adoption of modern technology by the US military, including the air forces. Bruckheimer also discussed the planned introduction of drones in the film, and the movie's story arc would also center on Cruise's character trying to prove to the world that pilots are not obsolete.

He said, "The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay."

This simply means that the upcoming film would be seeing a lot of competition between pilots and drones equipped with modern weaponry and sophisticated systems.

Apart from the story arc, Buckheimer also shared that Christopher McQuarrie, who is initially tapped to work on the script for the sequel, will have to drop out as he is now focused on the fifth "Mission Impossible" film, also starred by Cruise. Peter Craig is revealed to be the film's new scriptwriter for "Top Gun 2."
