Police are saying a Massachusetts man who promised to take care of his girlfriend skewered the teen instead with a sword.
Shane Curry, 20, from Stow, is believed to have stabbed 17-year-old Naveah Goddard to death during a fight on April 5.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Stow Police Chief Michael Sallese announced first-degree murder charges against Curry in a statement on September 6.
On the afternoon of April 5, Curry's mother went to the Stow police station requesting a welfare check on Curry at the home he shared with Goddard.
When officers arrived at the home, Curry would not allow them into a bedroom he had locked himself in for approximately two hours, reported NBC Boston.
Stow Police Chief Michael Sallese was called to the scene as he allegedly had "a good rapport" with Curry following a mental health crisis he assisted with, according to the indictment obtained by PEOPLE.
After Sallese banged on the door, Curry allegedly opened the door a few inches and said, "Get the f--- out, you creeps."
When officers were finally able to make entry, they discovered Goddard's lifeless body lying on a mattress on the floor.
Curry was handcuffed immediately and taken from the room.
While interviewing the suspect, Curry revealed he began hitting the victim, adding, "That's not working, so ok, I have to knife" them.
He allegedly stated he had "stabbed" the teen with a sword in the abdomen.
An autopsy showed Goddard was stabbed in the neck, torso, liver, and arms.
Michael Simmons, Goddard's grandfather, said, "There couldn't have been a nicer, more soulful, and more spiritual person" when describing the teen.
Simmons added he'd previously spoken to Curry, who "promised to take care of her."
Goddard's family has since launched a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for funeral expenses.
